Description

Bristol Cathedral stands in the civic heart of a city that has frequently been voted the best place to live in the UK.  The West of England region, with Bristol at its centre, has long been the powerhouse of the South West economy and the city is home to a diverse community of nearly half a million people. It is a city of many contrasts with many affluent parts, but also significant pockets of deprivation and high levels of intergenerational unemployment.

The Cathedral has been a Christian presence in the city for 900 years and is part of the wider Church of England Diocese of Bristol. As well as being a church, it is a diverse organisation, with a part time staff team equivalent to 15 FTE and 300 volunteers and includes a café, various properties, including residential property and it is a heritage building, used for events and a range of community, film and media activities. Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, the Cathedral is financially sound, with healthy reserves and has an experienced and capable staff team.

We are now at an exciting and pivotal point. Our new Dean, Mandy Ford, joined us in 2020 and she is leading the development of our vision for the Cathedral to “make more noise” and play a greater and more influential role in the life of the city and diocese. Our new Chief Operating Officer will work with the Dean and Chapter to shape and deliver a new strategy for us, will bring an entrepreneurial and transformational mindset and will lead and embed a “can do” change in our culture. You will be responsible for maximising resources and commercial activities, for managing the day-to-day operation of the Cathedral, whilst nurturing its unique character and vision. 

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate a significant track record of leading a complex and diverse operation, with the ability to inspire and develop a multi-disciplinary team and with experience of leading similar commercial and income generation activities. We are genuinely open minded as to your background and we are seeking a broad set of skills for this unique role. Whether your background is in the public or private sector, you will be a proven leader, with previous board experience, acute political sensitivity and judgement, together with outstanding communication and commercial skills. Above all, and whilst not necessarily a Christian, you must be able to demonstrate an empathy with the values, ministry and mission of the Cathedral and have a passion for its contribution to the life of the City and Diocese of Bristol.
